A mid century master piece by enamellist Matisse. Called "Bamboo", an example of this copper brooch is pictured in their reference book: "Copper Art Jewelry -- A Different Lustre" by Burholz and Kaplan. Oriental themes were blended into selected Matisse / Renoir's work of the '50s-'60s. In the brooch presented, bamboo, a symbol of prosperity, pierces a striated copper and lustrous red enamel leaf. Streamlined, sleek and sophisticated it embodied the mid century modernism that permeated the period.
The brooch measures approximately 3 1/4 inches x 3/4 inch with a 1/4 inch profile or height. Weight is about 16 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components original, untouched and intact. Copper retains lustrous patina with no pitting or discoloration. No polishing done. No dents or improper bends to metal. Red enamel intact with original dark flecking and blended dark leaf tips. Wonderful luster with no chips, nicks or scratches to enamel. Minimal wear. Pin mechanism strong and secure. Extremely clean. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
The brooch is signed on reverse: "MATISSE" underscored with "RENOIR" , copyright symbol to the left. Circa 1950s-1960s.
