Alfred Philippe / Trifari's "Sea Spray" design was patented in March of 1953 and can be seen in an ad on page 251 of Julia C. Carroll's "Collecting Costume Jewelry 202". During this period (pre copyright) many of Trifari's jewels, as the matching three piece parure pictured, were marked "Design Pat. Pend." for protection in the fiercely competitive market. The beautiful "Sea Spray" design incorporated foamy faux pearls, accented with sparkling chaton rhinestones. Burnished goldtone sprays twine throughout, inset with brilliant baguettes. The sinewy serpentine or snake chain, utilized in the necklace, is a signature component in many necklaces during this era. An added extra: This set's condition is as fresh as it's name "Sea Spray". Lovely and lively after all these years!
The parure includes the necklace, adjustable to about 16 1/2 inches. Decorative center spans about 3 inches with a maximum width of approximately 7/8 inch. Waves of spray cap at about 1/2 inch. Next is the brooch, at approximately 2 inches x 2 inches. Completing this set are the clip earrings, at about 3/4 inch x 5/8 inch. Largest faux pearls in this set are each about 6 millimeters. Weight of the parure is approximately 53 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. All faux pearls intact with all nacre and luster. No discolored or "off" pearls. All rhinestones intact and brilliant. All goldtone finishes intact, front and back. Pin back and earring clips secure. No damage. Please note that online photos sometimes make clear rhinestones appear gray -- in real life these stones are clear or "white".
Each piece is signed: The necklace on the inside of it's hook with "TRIFARI" and "PAT. PEND."; the brooch on it's reverse with "TRIFARI" and "PAT. PEND." and each original earring clip with "TRIFARI" and "DESIGN PAT. PEND.".
