The Jomaz / Mazer name has always been associated with better quality costume jewelry, employing such illustrious talents as Cartier's Marcel Boucher. Brothers Joseph and Lincoln Mazer split the Mazer Bros business (formed in 1927) in 1946. Joseph branded the names Joseph Mazer, Mazer and Jomaz from circa 1946-1981 while Lincoln used the Mazer Bros trademark from circa 1946-1951. Their jewelry, particularly from the earlier years, often imitated fine with intricate stone and metal work.
We have always suspected the parrot brooch presented to be a Jomaz piece, although it is unsigned. The subject matter, stone selections and settings, as well as the characteristic workmanship were all signature Jomaz. An identical example has been spotted with it's reverse signed: "JOMAZ".
The parrot sports a large Persian turquoise or robins egg blue colored glass cabochon at belly. His head and the branch he is perched on are encrusted with pave set rhinestones. Tail feathers feature two single clear chaton rhinestones with the heavy prong settings oft seen in Jomaz's work. A small brick red bead accents his eye. Detailed, textured golden feathers and a shiny beak complete the look.
The brooch measures approximately 2 1/8 inches x 1 1/4 inches at it's widest point with a 3/8 inch profile or height. Light blue glass cab is about 18 millimeters x 13 millimeters. Weight of the brooch is 14 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components original and intact. Persian turquoise cab free from chips, nicks, cracks or breaks with wonderful lustrous robins egg blue color. All rhinestones intact, clear and brilliant. All gold tone finish intact, front and back. No dents or improper bends to metal components. All soldering secure. Extremely clean. The brooch is unsigned. An authentic Jomaz piece. Circa 1960s.
