With motifs variously described variously as blackamoor, sultan, prince, genie, swami, fortune teller, tribal or native, this wonderful '40 vintage brooch and earrings is a showstopper in any category. Finely cast, highly dimensional pewter tone faces don golden turbans jeweled with red chaton rhinestones. Brooch turban adds a feathered plume. Golden hoops dangle from ears. Backgrounds are circular abalone disks. (We believe the brooch disk is authentic shell, while earring abalone finished disks appear to be reinforced with a synthetic material for strength.) Borders are gold tone bamboo shoots interspersed (in the brooch) with red baguette rhinestones. Interestingly, the faces, shells, back bracing and earring clips are affixed via fancy grooved, large head screws. (They can be carefully tightened manually with fingertips / nails.) Each piece is an example of the best in costume jewelry design, subject matter, materials and construction.
The brooch measures approximately 2 1/2 inches across with a maximum 1 inch profile or height. Brooch baguette rhinestones are about 8 millimeters x 4 millimeters. Weight of the brooch and earrings set is approximately 72 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. No chips, nicks, cracks, scratches or breaks to abalone / faux abalone disks. Gold tone finish intact, fronts and backs. Very minimal gold tone wear to some contact or solder points. Face pewter tone finish intact. No dents or improper bends to metal components. Pin mechanism and earring clips secure. Component attachment screws original and intact. Rhinestones intact, retaining red color and sparkle. Clean. Excellent vintage.
The set is unsigned. An extremely labor intensive work. Beautifully made and finished. Circa 1940s-1950s.
