Jomaz, a relative of Mazer Bros., Joseph Mazer and Mazer signed it's jewelry with the "Jomaz" name from about 1946-1981. Specialty stones, as well as faux gemstones were often used in classic designs. Marcel Boucher worked for a time for Mazer Bros. before branding his own name. The influence each had on the other is evident in the firms' high quality work. Jomaz' figural designs are especially popular.
The butterfly brooch presented, circa 1960s, features riveted wings in both silver tone and gold tone, pave set with clear rhinestones chatons and accented with oval faux opal cabochons and round and oval Persian turquoise colored cabs. Pairs of additional wings are in textured gold tone. Eye are set with ruby red rhinestones. Long antennae arch overhead. A section textured body bisects.
The brooch has a wingspan of about 1 7/8 inches x 1 1/8 inches with a maximum 3/8 inch profile or loft. Faux opal cabs are approximately 5 millimeters x 4 millimeters. Weight of the brooch is about 16 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. Simulated opals retain wonderful iridescent colors. Imitation turquoise, fine robins egg blue color. Red rhinestone retain color and sparkle. Clear stones retain sparkle with minor aging of stones, common in Jomaz pave' rhinestone work. All gold tone and silver tone finishes intact, front and back. Riveting secure. No dents or improper bends to metal. Clean. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
Reverse of brooch is signed: "JOMAZ" followed by copyright symbol. There is also a small identification mark of the reverse of the silver tone wing section. It could be interpreted as a letter(s) or symbol, indicating perhaps the stone setter's mark. Circa 1960s.
