Hobe's association with the stage and screen began in it's early days when it supplied accessories for the extravagant Ziegfeld Follies in the late '20s. The company went on to align itself with Hollywood -- fast rising as a major influence in the fashion and jewelry industry. Stars and fans alike adorned themselves with the latest baubles and bangles. The golden age of costume jewelry was yet to come and Hobe was ready to shine.
The pendant necklace presented, circa 1960s, features a large gold tone filigree cross with metal bead rosettes. It is suspended from a gold tone chain with filigree capped glass bead stations. Beads include large tear drops in a bronzy hematite like mirrored finish and faceted rounds in lustrous purplish black. A spring ring clasp secures.
The necklace is a wearable approximate 30 inches. The bail and decorative chain loop provide an additional 1 1/4 inches. The cross proper is a generous 4 inches x 3 inches with a 3/16 inch thickness. Chain teardrop beads are 18 millimeters x 12 millimeters; rounds, 8 millimeters. Weight of the necklace is about 52 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. Gold tone finish intact, front and back. Some finish wear (revealing a brass tone base) to spring ring clasp and end jump rings only. All beads free from chips, nicks, cracks or breaks, retaining treatments, finishes and luster. Bail and clasp secure. Extremely clean. No damage / no repairs. Minimal wear, as stated.
We believe the chain is original to the pendant. It does appear to be the correct vintage with wear at clasp commensurate with age. We think it compliments the cross beautifully. If you prefer, your chain of choice can easily be substituted.
The reverse of the cross is signed within an oval cartouche: "Hobe" with copyright symbol above. Circa 1960s.
