Michael and Jay Chernow founded the Monocraft company in Providence in the 1920s, initially producing monograms. Jewelry was added later and in 1937 the Monet name was first used. Known for it's simplicity of design sans the usual embellishments of rhinestones / beads, many of Monet's vintage pieces easily adapt to current fashion trends.
The double pronged fur clip presented, in sterling silver features the exuberant energy of the art moderne movement of the 1940s. The rimmed circular center is draped with three curled ribbon like swirls. Marketed as fur clips in their day, the pieces can be repurposed as clips on sturdy fabrics, hats, sashes and wherever your imagination may take you.
The clip measures about 2 1/4 inches x 1 1/4 inches with a 1/2 inch profile or height. Weight of the clip is approximately 12 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components original and intact. Double prongs remain sharp with tight, snap shut closure. No dents, improper bends, crush or collapse to sterling. No scratches or abrasions. No stains. Clip has developed a patina which has been left intact. Polishing, as preferred by most, is left to the discretion of the buyer. If you are so inclined to polish, this clip has the potential to shine up like new. Clean. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
Reverse of clip is signed; "MONET" and "STERLING". The clip mechanism itself is also signed: "STERLING". Circa 1940s.
