The flower blossom / floral spray motif, a recurring theme throughout jewelry design history, took on a significant role in the late '30s-40s. Examples morphed into the exuberantly stylized brooches of the art moderne movement -- often with exaggerated, oversized components such as elongated stems and foliage and huge disproportional buds and blossoms. It was an unconventional marriage of form and fluidity. Many were executed in sterling silver or sterling silver vermeil (gold washed sterling) and set with art glass stones resembling semi precious gems.
The brooch presented, circa 1940s, exemplifies this modern or moderne style. Heavy sterling silver base is plated with a golden wash and set with faux aqua marine stones in rectangular / emerald and baguette cuts. Clear, unfoiled glass chaton rhinestones accent. We love how this particular brooch veers slightly off course with it's contemporaries. The foliage and stems exhibit a more geometric, angular slant -- the jagged leaves jutting in twists and turns. Blossom and bud are represented with signature large and showy glass stones in period aquamarine color. Wonderful, edgy art moderne.
The brooch measures a generous approximate 3 1/4 inches x 1 7/8 inches at it's widest point with a 3/8 inch profile or height. Emerald cut glass stones is about 18 millimeters x 13 millimeters; baguettes, 10 millimeters x 5 millimeters and large chaton, approximately 9 millimeters. Weight of the brooch is 20 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. All glass stones free from chips, nicks, cracks or breaks. Great consistent aqua marine color. Minor wear to vermeil front finish (photos show much reflection -- not indicative of wear). More consistent vermeil wear to reverse. No dents or improper bends to metal. Pin mechanism secure. Clean -- no polishing done. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
Reverse of brooch is stamped "STERLING". Although wonderfully designed utilizing quality materials and workmanship, no maker's mark is evident. Circa 1940s.
