The storied past of Deja / Reja. begins in 1939. Founded as the former by Samuel Finklestein of New York, the company was taken to court by contemporary DuJay for trademark infringement. A decision by the court in 1941 forced Deja to change it's name. The "D" was changed to an "R" and voila -- Reja was born. The company existed for a mere 12 years, declaring bankruptcy in 1952 and finally ceasing operations in 1953.
Reja's legacy is it's wonderful designs, quality materials and workmanship expertise. Much Reja was fabricated in luxurious rhodium plate or sterling silver, some with gold wash (vermeil) finish. Embellishments included enamel, rhinestones and art glass. Noted are it's Africana and Gardenesque lines.
The brooch presented, fabricated in heavy sterling silver, glows with seven glass faux moonstone cabochons, a single clear chaton rhinestone separating each stone. The stylized bouquet is gathered by a band of pave set clear rhinestones. Stem tips are punctuated by unfoiled and open backed Chinese red, crimp set glass chatons. Evocative the exuberant Art Moderne movement in the 1940s, the brooch is a shining example of Reja's highly desirable sterling silver work of the period.
The brooch measures approximately 2 1/4 inches at it's widest point x 2 inches with a 3/8 inch profile or height. Luminescent oval glass cabs are about 12 millimeters x 10 millimeters; red art glass round brilliants, 3 millimeters. Weight of the brooch is a generous 34 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. All heavily pronged, simulated moon stones free from chips, nicks, cracks or breaks. Wonderful glow displays bluish tints with flashes of peachy golds. All band pave set rhinestones intact and sparkly with an ever so slight age commensurate dim. All red glass stem stones free from damage. No dents or improper bends to sterling silver. Wonderful soft patina. Pin mechanism secure. Clean. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
Reverse of the brooch is signed with "REJA STERLING". Although the "R" cannot be discerned and part of the "E is worn, this is a documented REJA piece. Circa 1946-47.
