Italian immigrant and patriarch Ralph DeRosa founded the family business in New York City in 1934, flourishing until 1970. DeRosa's signature style consisted of large floral presentations employing many of the same techniques used in the production of fine jewelry. Enamel occasionally embellished. From about 1942 to 1949 sterling silver was used -- at times washed or plated in gold (vermeil). Premium rhinestones and/or art glass stones often accented. Many DeRosa pieces were marked only with paper tags rendering signed examples, particularly in sterling, important and rare. DeRosa also manufactured jewelry for other makers, including Elsa Schiaparelli.
The exuberant fur clip presented, circa 1940s, is textbook DeRosa. In heavy sterling silver, the large swirled, curled and furled floral blossom and foliage features a golden finish, rhinestone tipped stamens and a large faceted, unfoiled and open backed art glass oval in red. On reverse, a double pronged fur clip mechanism with two short end prongs (to help ensure stability) facilitates attachment.
The clip measures an impressive, approximate 3 inches x 1 5/8 inches at it's widest point with a 1/2 inch profile or height. Red glass stone is about 18 millimeters x 13 millimeters. Weight of the clip is approximately 30 grams.
Condition is excellent vintage. All components intact. All rhinestones original and intact. Slight age dimming. Glass oval free from chips, nicks, cracks or breaks. Crisp faceting and rich ruby red color. No dents or improper bends to metal. Clip prongs straight and sharp. Hinge mechanism strong and secure with tight snap shut closure. Golden finish intact with age commensurate patina. Personality untouched. As preferred by most, polishing is left to the buyer's discretion. Clean. No damage / no repairs. Excellent vintage.
Reverse of brooch is signed at top of fur clip hinge: "R. DEROSA" underscored with "STERLING". Circa 1940s.
