For your consideration, a expressive mid century watercolor by the noted California watercolorist Gladys Louise Bowman Fies (1909-2005). The watercolor, in excellent condition with no foxing, tears or stains, measures (matted) 22” x 14 1/2” in its original 30 ¼” x 22 ¼” wood frame. The watercolor is noteworthy for its highly saturated colors and strong composition, The work is signed “Fies”, and is most probably circa 1950’s. Fies was born in Kirkland, Texas, on December 23, 1909 and after many years in Dallas, she moved to northern California with her husband William Fies. She was a pupil of Ralph Ledesma, Jade Fon, Millard Sheets, Rex Brandt, and George Post. She often gave workshops in San Mateo and San Carlos, Ca. Missions were a favorite subject matter as well as floral still lifes. Fies was a member of many watercolor and art associations and her work was exhibited at many galleries and museums, including San Francisco's de Young Museum.
