For your consideration, a fine signed modernist watercolor by the German artist Hedwig Jarke (1882- ? ), dated 1934 and notated with what looks like the word “Marza”. The watercolor exhibits exceptional modernist aesthetics; the abstracted horizontal color bands of the hills and road are juxtaposed with the vertical design of the trees, and the palette of muted foreground colors contrast elegantly with the bright blues exhibited in the sky. The painting is in excellent condition with no foxing, stains, or repairs (the inside of the glass needs cleaning and there is some minor foxing localized to the matt). The matted work measures 16 1/4” x 14 (unmated work is larger) and the original period frame measures 23” x 21”. Jarke is known primarily for his woodcut prints and his watercolors are exceptionally rare, and the work offered is a very fine example of 20th century European art.
