For your consideration, a strikingly stylized mid-century watercolor by the San Francisco Bay Areas artist Alfred Cunningham. The circa 1955-1960’s painting features a vibrant and saturated color palette and cubist influenced approach to composition and overall aesthetics. Particularly noteworthy are the work’s stylized expressionist rendering of boats and figures. The painting is in excellent condition and measures 22” x 16” within a 28” x 23 ¾” frame. Signed, “Al Cunningham”, with notations on the verso.
Alfred A. Cunningham was active in Northern California in the 1950’s- 1970’s and was known for portraying subjects ranging from portraits to landscapes, mostly rendered in watercolor. He was a member of the Marin Soc. of Artists, Marin Watercolor Soc. and Peninsula Outdoor Painters and was associated with the Artists Coop. SF, the Watercolor Artists of SF, Artists Equity, and was Artist-in-residence at San Francisco’s De Young Museum.
