Brenda Tuxford ( 1938-2004) was an important member of the Northern California Humboldt County community of Eureka, having moved to Humboldt County from New York City where she was a
high fashion model in the late 1960’s, rubbing shoulders with the
likes of Jack Casey, Dick Cavett, Jim Moran and Monty Rock III. While In Humboldt, she met Libby Maynard while they were both pursuing their master's degrees in art, and the pair founded The Ink People Center for the Arts in 1979. The work being offered displays Tuxford style of “expressing in a whimsical yet elegantly rendered manner her interpretation of the people and environment that surrounded her”. The highly stylized subject matter is quintessentially 1970’s in it’s aesthetics; the work features angled juxtapositions of figure and background, Asian influenced motifs, and underlying psychological components. The inking, created by the deep bite etching process, is a wonderful rich black with a tinge of blue. This highly graphic and dynamic work by an important Humboldt artist displays first-rate technique and quirky subject matter and will make a wonderful addition to any collection of 20th century American studio art.
