This fine handmade California Coastal Redwood stash/jewelry box was created in the 1960's-1970's; a artistic work created during the "back to the land" movement of that lively and creative decade. This very early example of carved "Hippie Period" functional art is noteworthy in its artful and rustic entirely hand crafted form and the age and quality of the first-growth redwood burl, out of which this spirited object emerged. Coastal Redwood is only found along the California Coast from Big Sur to within 50 miles into Oregon and is among the most ancient and majestic of all living trees, up to 2,500 years old. The sliding two-piece box measures 4 ¾" across, 3" wide, and 2 7/8" tall. The piece has its original owner-applied sticker (removable). This is one of the earliest examples of this indigenous Northern California art form that I have come across. The stash box has a quiet and subtle presence and vibe, very reassuring and comforting. Smells good, too!
