Gerard van Spaendonck was born on 22 March 1746 in Tilburg. At the age of eighteen he went to study with painter Herreyns in Antwerp. In 1769 he left for Paris, where he worked for several years as a miniature and decorative painter. Five years later he was appointed royal botanical miniature painter at the court of King Louis XVI. He was assigned a house in the Louvre. After the death of Madame Françoise Madeleine Basseporte in 1780, Gerard officially succeeded her as a royal miniature painter and he moved to the royal gardens. He then started working on the so-called vélins (vellum), botanical studies in gouache technique on a special kind of parchment. Incidentally, artists have also worked for this series (since 1645) and after him. Clients were the successive kings Louis XIII up to and including Louis XVI. Gerard produced about 55 sheets between about 1781 and 1785. The vellum is one of the most important botanical works in the world. The entire collection of 6500 pages in 105 albums, based in the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. A Tilburger owes the honor to this special series of books, edition one, to have contributed. In 1793 Gerard van Spaendonck was appointed Professeur d'Iconographie, and two years later he became director of the Jardin des Plantes (the royal gardens of the Louvre) and also director of the porcelain factory in Sèvres. Between 1799 and 1801, he produced twenty-four engravings in his own management, which were made according to his watercolors. They were six series of four, which were bundled under the title Fleurs dessinées d'après nature par G. van Spaendonck (Paris, chez l'Author au Jardin des Plantes). They are among the world's best plant engravings.
In 1804 he was one of the first to receive the newly established order of the Legion of Honor, and in 1808 he was granted the title of Count by Emperor Napoleon. Gerard van Spaendonck died in Paris on 11 May 1822 and was buried at the famous Père Lachaise cemetery
