For your consideration, an abstract expressionist mixed media work on paper entitled “Benign Eruptions” by the noted San Francisco Bay Area artist and educator Helen Breger (1918-2013). The unique one-of-a-kind work on pape features pastel application over monotype and is noteworthy for it vital pastel handling and dynamic composition. The work is in excellent condition with no material loss, stains, or foxing, and measures 24” x 19”, framed 31” x 24”. It is signed, titled, and dated by the artist in pencil. Helen Breger is represented in many museum collections and her fashion illustrations appeared in The Chronicle in the 1950s. Se taught many for many years at the California College of Arts and Crafts (presently California College of Art), as well as the University of California at Berkeley.
Born in Vienna, she was educated at the Arts Students League in New York, The San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University and California College of Arts and Crafts (MFA). She was a fellow at Mac Dowell Colony in Peterborough, NH, and in recent years studied bronze casting in Italy. Her main Concentration was in the field of drawing, graphics, fine art prints and various aspects of design. While studying at the Art Students League in New York City, she was freelancing as an illustrator.
