For your consideration, a California Coastal redwood sculpture signed “JHS” “1978”. The carved work features double sided female figures reflecting modernist design aesthetics, and the wood has beautiful grain and is a warm honey-red in color. This extraordinarily aesthetic piece is carved from wood could be 2,500 years old; this variety is only found from Big Sur to the Oregon border. The sculpture is in excellent condition and measures 11” tall, 12 ¾” on its redwood base. The work was found in the California coastal art colony of Mendocino, ground zero for the “back to the land” movement of the 1950’s -1970’s, an area noted for it artists and wood turners (which have included Doug Ayers, and many others).
