For your consideration, a fine oil on canvas painting, circa 1940’s, by the Dutch painter Carel Lodewyk Dake, II (1886-1946). The painting features a sailboat at full sail, most probably in an Asian sea or the San Francisco Bay area, locales that Dake used in many of his works. The work is noteworthy for its expert paint handling, strong composition, and elegant color palette; the colors are luminescent and seem to glow with an inner warmth. The work is in excellent condition and exhibits the usual paint crackling that one would expect of a work of this vintage. The canvas measures a massive 40” x 20” (framed, 47 ½” 23 ¾”).
Dake was born in Holland in 1886 and, while based in Amsterdam, Dake was active in San Francisco during the PPIE. During his stay he painted views of Mount Tamalpais, the Golden Gate, and other local landmarks. Exh: Universal Expo (Brussels). The work is guaranteed to be an original work by Dake, as stated.
