For your consideration, a fine watercolor by Herbert J. Day (American, 1875-1950). This fine painting of an alpine village measures 13 ½” x 9” (matted) in original carved wood period frame 21” x 16 ½”. The work is in excellent condition with no foxing or stains. The watercolor features strong colors and expert paint handling and is signed “HJD ‘97”. Herbert Day came to the United States as a child from London, England but spent most of his life as a resident of Des Plaines, Illinois. He worked in both oil and watercolors favoring landscapes, often of larger dimensions. His favorite locales included northern and southern Illinois including the Galena and Elizabethtown areas, the Illinois Ozarks, Indiana around Hobart and Turkey Run, and Wisconsin. He received his training at the Art Institute of Chicago and Smith Academy. He exhibited widely at venues that included the Hoosier Salon (1930), the Art Institute, Chicago artists Annual Exhibitions, and the All Illinois Society of Fine Arts.
