For your consideration, a rare bowl in ceramic in glazed ceramic and melted glass by the American artist Waylande Gregory (1905-1961). This fine piece measures 5 ½” in diameter by 1 5/8” deep and weighing 2 ½ lbs and is noteworthy for its modernist aesthetics and fine craftsmanship. The glaze is composed of modernist shades of light blues, atmospheric watermelon pink on a semi-mat background of crinkled off-white and light pearl. Noteworthy is the bowls interior of emerald green crackled glass; this pool of glass is thick and refracts light into complex facets of luminance and pattern. Identified on the reverse with “Waylande Gregory” “US Patent” “ 2,357,399”. In excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Waylande Desantis Gregory (1905 Baxter Springs, Kansas – 1971, New Jersey) was one of the most innovative and prolific American art-deco ceramics sculptors of the early twentieth century. He was also an early seminal figure in the studio glass movement, and helped define the aesthetic of what was to become the American art deco movement. This bowl represents the integration of Gregory’s glass blowing with his ceramic works and was most probably produced in the 1930’s when he became artist in residence at the Cranbrook Academy at Bloomfield Hills in Michigan; here he was able to an electric kiln, which gave him precise control of his ceramic work.
