For your consideration, a mid-century abstract still life lithograph by the noted American artist Donald Roberts (1923-2015). The 1961 abstract expressionist lithograph, entitled “Still Life –Marble Top”, is noteworthy for its dynamic post-cubist composition and strong graphic elements. The work is signed in pencil “Donald Roberts ‘61” with the added notations “Still Life –Marble Top” “Slate 1” “3/9”. The large work is in excellent condition with no damage or repairs and measures (matted) 22” x 20”, and is in its original 31” x 27” wood frame. The work displays an elegant and vital aesthetic and shows well in every setting and with all styles and periods of décor.
Donald Roberts was a nationally known lithographer, painter and sculptor as well as a highly respected teacher during his long career. Born in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire in 1923, he graduated from Brewster Academy and went on to study at the Vesper George School of Art in Boston, Massachusetts graduating in 1948, teaching there through 1950. Roberts was awarded a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island in 1952 and his Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in 1953. He was a professor of art in the School of Art at Ohio University from 1953 to 1991 teaching painting and printmaking, later Professor Emeritus. He also played the major role in collecting prints for the College of Fine Arts, which eventually became the Kennedy Museum’s Contemporary Print Collection. From 2010 Donald served on the Kennedy Museum of Art’s Advisory Board.
