Collectible hand carved and painted celluloid pastoral cosmetic compact
C. late 1890’s – early 1900’s.
The compact is of trapezoid shape with cut bottom corners.
The lid of the compact is intricately hand carved and pierced on butterscotch celluloid.
The bottom is made of the same material with plain surface.
The main attraction is the cartouche with pastoral scene.
A maiden with a young shepherd and 3 sheep hand carved and painted on celluloid
and covered with beveled glass.
The cartouche is outlined with elaborate repousse brass frame.
The side rims of the lid and the bottom of the compact are made of embossed gilded brass.
The mirrors at the time were made with silver amalgam which deteriorates over the time.
The condition of this mirror is good for the age, it is a bit murky.
There is original mesh in good shape.
The compact box measures 3 5/8” X 3” X 3/4”
Aroma of original powder is still recognizable.
Excellent antique condition.
