A pretty Art Deco jade green hair comb with waves design

This lovely green marbleized hair comb shows some Japanese influence in the design of the heading. The coils of the scrollwork resemble the representation of waves in many Japanese prints.
The lovely mottled green colouring is also reminiscent of that prized oriental material, Jade.
One of the main features of the more modern celluloid materials which truly came into their own in the early 20th century is that they permitted a whole new range of decorative effects. Apart from the traditional faux tortoiseshell effect combs could now be marbleised, or made to resemble mother of pearl, moiré, and so-on. When combined with other techniques such as surface carving, moulding and inlay with rhinestones and other materials these can produce a very rich encrusted effect.
The final illustration is taken from a fashion illustration dated 1923 and shows how such large combs were often worn at an angle.
