This large and very beautiful translucent celluloid comb is made in the form of a fern leaf with the fronds inclined to the left. It is literally smothered in dark blue rhinestones against a dark blue background giving a very rich effect.
Although celluloid was invented in the 19th century it really came into its own in the early 20th. Celluloid lent itself to a variety of decorating techniques, and many different varieties were employed to embellish the fashionable hair accessories. For example the ornament could be made with a colourful and flashy trim of coloured rhinestones embedded in the celluloid and this is typical of hair accessories made fro the US market.
This type of ornament is often known as Spanish or mantilla comb because it resembles a smaller version of the traditional large tortoiseshell ornaments worn by Spanish ladies with their native dress. In practice any comb which has a high upstanding heading or top is often called a mantilla comb.
