This pretty hair accessory is fresh to the market, being part of an extensive private collection which I recently purchased. It is a striking Art Deco black celluloid hair comb featuring an iconic Egyptian Revival theme.
The Egyptian Revival theme was very strong at this time and is found not only in items of fashion and personal adornment but also in interior design and architecture. Glamour postcards of the period show many famous actresses and celebrities wearing Egyptian and oriental style costume.
The final picture is taken from a collection of contemporary fashion magazine illustrations and shows the fashionable coiffure and the kinds of ornaments used to decorate it.
The development of early Hollywood encouraged the exotic Egyptian look. The 1917 version of Cleopatra with Theda Bara in the leading role and the later 1934 film with Claudette Colbert in the same part, demonstrates how aesthetics were ripe for incorporating Egyptian motifs into costume. This taste for the exotic was given a fresh impetus by the discovery of the tomb of the boy king Tutankhamun in the early 1920s.
The designs of Ancient Egypt became one of the major influences on the Art Deco style. Ancient Egyptian motifs were quickly integrated into fashion, makeup, architecture and Hollywood. Fashion designers incorporated Egyptian Colours, patterns, and jewellery into the fashions of the later Art Deco period.
