This pretty hair accessory set is fresh to the market, being part of an extensive private collection which I recently purchased.
It matches a comb and barrette set which probably date from the 1910s – 1920s decade. They are made in black celluloid and further embellished with lines of tiny brass dots in imitation of pique. The large comb is a back comb and the matching barrette would probably have been worn in the side of the dressing.
A back comb is a type of ornament which is specially designed to be worn at the rear of the head. Such accessories are usually deeply curved to fit the back of the skull, which makes them unsuitable for wearing anywhere else. Typically they are broader than they are high, and have a top or heading finished off with some kind of decorative edge or border. Often this incorporates inlay of rhinestones, metal plates or some other decorative embellishment.
The final picture is taken from a collection of contemporary fashion magazine illustrations and shows the fashionable coiffure and the kinds of ornaments used to decorate it.
In the early 20th century such combs were used to decorate the back of the dressing in a number of ways. Sometimes they were used to provide support for a chignon. They could also be used to keep growing locks of hair in order on women who had cropped their hair short, and then regretted it.
