This lovely vintage Japanese comb and hairpin set comprises a half moon shaped comb (kushi) and a bodkin style hair pin (kogai). The hair pin comes apart in the middle so that it can be inserted into the chignon. These ornaments are made from boxwood overlaid with shiny black lacquer. This has been further decorated with mother of pearl inlay. The design is that of butterflies and chrysanthemum flowers, which the national flowers of Japan are. The back and kogai have a simpler but complementary design.

These traditional Japanese combs (kushi) hair accessories come from the notable British private collection of Pat Johnstone, a Cornish artist and sculptor. She had a passion for collecting Asian antiques and especially Japanese combs, kogai and kanzashi. Her lifetime collection has been curated for over 40 years.

FURTHER INFORMATION:
The elaborate hairstyles of the Edo period required a great deal of time and effort to maintain them. So much so that the value of what a woman wore in her hair often exceeded even the cost of the beautiful kimono and other garments which she wore. The traditional set comprises a comb or kushi made in a simple form of a rectangle or half moon shape. This is usually combined with the bodkin type hair pin or kogai which comes apart in the center to allow it to be inserted into the chignon. Japanese kushi and kogai sets became the expression of a woman’s social class, marital status and character. Such ornaments represent a link with traditional forms in Japanese hair accessories which have been used for many hundreds of years before Western styles began to supplant traditional forms.

The final two pictures depict other items in the collection and illustrations from traditional Japanese hair styles which show how such ornaments were worn.
