DESCRIPTION:

A collection of attractive hatpins stick or jabot pins dating from the Art Deco period early 20th century. The finials are decorated in brown, white and gold with a combination of celluloid faux pearl, sequins, and twisted metallic braid. The example in amber glass is particularly pretty. These short shafted ornaments can also function as lapel or stick pins to ornament a lapel or sweater.

These hat ornaments are part of a large British private collection. Other items from the collection are shown in the final picture. The collage picture shows the huge hats of the period which these accessories were designed to ornament and secure.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Hatpins reached a peak of popularity between the 1890s and 1920s. Having originated in the 1850s to secure straw hats, hatpins became longer and more ornate over time. 1910 was the extreme of hatpin length, with the stems alone reaching 10 to 12 inches.

With the decline of large elaborate hats and the advent of the close fitting cloche, hatpins were of much smaller proportions. Rather than holding the hat in place they were now designed to decorate it. Art Deco period hatpins, of which these are typical, are mostly of celluloid pearl effect, fabric, sequins and braid. These hatpins made from metal decorated with pearls and rhinestones or ornate celluloid effects were commercially produced. The examples with twisted cord or sequins wound around a round or pear shaped fabric core were probably custom made by milliners to co-ordinate with a particular hat or ensemble.
