FURTHER INFORMATION:

These distinctive brooches and jewellery items were made between 1969 to 1981 and are very much in the iconic Art Deco style. Lea Stein began working in the fashion industry in 1957. By 1965 she had begun to develop the innovative process of layering very thin sheets of cellulose acetate (or rhodoid) and laminating them to form a multi coloured sandwich of plastic. Each sandwich was then baked, cooled and cut into shapes. The entire process could take as long as 6 months. This technique allowed her to insert different fabrics (such as brocades and lace), colours and textures into the plastic. For this reason each piece is individual and no two are exactly alike.

Lea Stein's work is heavily influenced by the Art Deco period. Rhodoid, the cellulose acetate from which her jewellery is fashioned, strongly resembles Bakelite and some older plastics, such as Galalith. There is a uniqueness to her jewellery that has never been duplicated by any other jewellery designer.

Stein’s figural pins are considered to be the most collectible. Her signature foxes, panthers, cats and tortoises are big chunky pieces that command attention due to their three dimensional designs and distinctive colour combinations. Other popular figurals include women dressed in deco style costumes. All pins are signed “Lea Stein - Paris” in block letters on a metal pin-back. This metal back was heat mounted to the pins in all her earliest works. The Lea Stein signature on all of these works contributes to the high collectibility of these pins.
