A vintage leather gentleman’s collar box or doll hat box

CONDITION: good vintage condition with expected wear for age

SIZE: 7 ins dia x 3½ ins h (18 x 9 cm)

APPROXIMATE DATE: early to mid 20th century

MATERIALS: leather, metal

DESCRIPTION:

My research suggests that this handsome circular leather box or case was probably once used to contain gentlemen’s collars. In the days when men wore stiff separate collars they would have needed somewhere to pack and store them safely. Therefore every gentleman had one of these to safely keep his collars and collar studs and possibly cuff links as well. The round shape was specially adapted for storing collars so that they remained in good condition. It is difficult to exactly date such items as they were continually used over decades and changed little in design or appearance.

The box is in good condition with a hinged top which is still securely attached. It has the letters W A R embellished on the lid and this was probably the initials of the owner. There are some minor scuff marks which can probably be polished out. It fastens with a strap and metal buckle arrangement which is in good functional condition and can be seen in the close up pictures.

Lacking stiff detached collars this handsome box would be suitable for keeping a doll’s hat or other small items safely and securely. It would work well as a box for jewellery or other small precious items such as sewing tools.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Shirt studs have been used in the western world since the mid-19th century to attach detachable collars to shirts. The detachable collar was invented in 1827 by Hannah Montague, who wanted to save time and labour by washing her husband's shirt collars separately. The collar was attached to the shirt with two studs, one through a buttonhole at the back of the collar and one through each of two buttonholes at the front.
