Unusual faux tortoise hair comb with openwork zoomorphic design

CONDITION: good vintage condition

SIZE: 6 x 3½ ins (15 x 9 cm) decorative part 3 ins h (7.5 cm)

APPROXIMATE DATE: early 20th century

MATERIALS: celluloid

DESCRIPTION:

Here is a handsome Spanish mantilla style hair ornament made in celluloid faux shell. The comb has a tall openwork heading whose complex design of interlaced scroll work betrays the influence of zoomorphic interlacement. This is a style derived from ancient Celtic patterns which show the heads and bodies of birds and creatures intertwined. Celtic derived designs were very popular under the Art Nouveau influence.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Combs like this are often known as Spanish style from their resemblance to the beautiful tall combs worn by Spanish ladies with their traditional dress. They are designed to have the tall heading stand proud of the head so that it can be sen from every angle.
