DESCRIPTION:

Here is a very beautiful Victorian tiara style comb It is so called because the flexible brass hinge allows it to be worn on the crown of the head like a mini tiara

The four pronged comb mount is of faux shell and supports a curved heading of polished brass. This is adorned by a row of six large faux pearl spheres. The spheres are separated by cup shaped elements of filigree gilded metal with a scalloped edge.

The decorative metal heading is wide and curved and gives the effect of a formal tiara when worn on top of the head.

Combs like this adorned with ball shaped motifs were extremely popular during the Victorian era and are found with balls in a wide variety of materials. The final picture is a collage made up from contemporary sources and showing a number of similar combs with a spherical decoration.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

The hairstyles of the mid-Victorian period were large and impressive, with vast quantities of false hair being used to form a huge chignon. Therefore the ornaments which were used to adorn them were often equally large and impressive. Large and handsome combs would have been used by a fashionable Victorian lady to adorn the back of the hair, probably being placed above or within a chignon.

Such combs are often called tiara combs because the hinged mount gave them a considerable degree of flexibility. They could therefore be worn either in the back of the dressing, below or within the chignon, or tiara style above the forehead. In this latter position the tines would be concealed beneath the hair, so that the ornamental heading functioned as a mini tiara.
