DESCRIPTION:

Here is a pretty aigrette style hair comb dating from the late Victorian or Edwardian period. It is an excellent example of the kinds of lighter hair accessories which were fashionable around the turn of the 20th century.

The comb has a faux tortoise mount with two tines upon which is mounted a figural bird placed in plished gold tone metal. The bird is set with clear rhinestones. It is mounted upon a flexible brass hinge which allows it to be adjusted to various angles.

These new hair styles lend a softer and more feminine look and required a lighter touch in the types of accessories that were used to compliment them. The result was that hair combs became smaller, lighter and more airy in their design. The collage photograph shows illustrations taken from contemporary sources and depicts similar ornaments and how they were placed in the hair styles of the day.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Birds and wings were popular motifs in late 19th century combs. Birds have been used as symbols of freedom, hope, spirit, transition, and new opportunities since time immemorial, in every culture, in every era. They can represent the ability to rise above challenges and gain a broader view of life. Spirituality: In many cultures, birds are seen as messengers from the spiritual realm.
