This magnificent large Tiffany hair comb is a wonderful example and a must for collectors of classic American antique silver. It was probably made in the mid 1870s in the so-called Spanish style which dominated comb making at that time. Spanish style combs are so called because they seek to emulate the beautiful ornaments worn by Spanish ladies with their traditional dress. The salient point in this style of ornament is a tall upstanding heading or top which can be seen from all angles when placed in the hair.
This wonderful example has an ornately decorated heading with both engraved and repousee decoration. The apex has an openwork panel which is set with a marquise shaped yellow citrine. Scrolled motifs occupy the spaces on either side. Beneath is a deep band of decoration with a scroll and acorn motif. The comb has nine integral tines which hold it firmly in the hair. There are all in good condition and not bent or twisted as in many sterling ornaments of this period.
The final picture is taken from an engraved fashion plate of the period and shows some examples of how these high topped Spanish combs were worn and the fashionable hair dressing of the day.
FURTHER INFORMATION:
Tiffany & Co. began way back in 1837 as a stationary and "fancy goods" store, However the store shifted its main focus to jewelry in 1853.
Being in business so long Tiffany & Co. has enabled the company to produce jewelry in many different styles through the decades. During their heyday Tiffany & Co. produced hair combs in various styles from the Victorian through the Edwardian era and into the 1920's.

Return Policy
You may initiate a return of this item within 3 days of delivery. More DetailsShipping, Handling, Insurance Policy
As a disabled non driver I ship twice weekly (usually tuesday and friday) as I have to pay someone to visit the post office. Standard shipping is via the post office/Royal Mail international signed for (eg 1-3 weeks to USA). Normal shipping schedule may be subject to alteration during major holiday periods. We can provide Fedex expedited shipping at extra cost on request (eg 2/3 days to USA). Buyers are responsible for supplying a correct and up to date address on the platform. We cannot accept responsibility for shipping difficulties which may arise when buyer's address details are incorrect. In this case the package will return to us and any expense for re-sending will be billed to the buyer. This is industry standard. Returns: RETURNS FROM OUTSIDE THE UNITED KINGDOM - VERY IMPORTANT: The UK has a very low import threshold and all items imported from outside the United Kingdom are liable to attract import tax. Items returned from outside the UK must closely follow our returns procedure. In particular packages must be clearly marked (preferably on the customs label) with the words "RETURNED GOODS - NO TAX PAYABLE". Unfortunately we are unable to accept out of pocket expenses to recover our own property as a result of the above procedure not being followed. Any package which returns to us with a customs charge attached will be refused and will return to the buyer to be correctly re-sent. We only accept returns in "same condition as sent." This is industry standard. We cannot accept returns which have been in any way altered or amended by the buyer or which are damaged or missing essential parts which were included at the time of sale. This applies also to items which arrive safely and are subsequently damaged while in possession of the buyer. If the error is ours (for example we sent an incorrect item or one which we agree was grossly mis-described) we will refund buyers reasonable return costs for using a similar service to that originally used (eg USPS or a national postal service). Buyer pays for actual shipping, handling and insurance for items where the reason for return is not due directly to our error. Responsibility for returning items to us in "same condition as sent" rests with the buyer. For this reason we recommend obtaining proof of postage and using a tracked/insured service. Returned items which are lost or damaged in transit remain buyers responsibility and it will be necessary for them to make a claim from their postal service. As per industry standard, we are only able to provide a refund once the item is back in our hands in same condition as sent. This also applies to items returned to us because the buyer abandoned them or failed to make delivery arrangements for items left at the post office. Lost, damaged and abandoned items. For items damaged in transit TO the buyer we will submit a claim to our insurers on production of clear photographic evidence of the damaged item and packaging materials (if appropriate). We can only accept photographs sent as a jpg attachment to an email. We are unable to accept pictures sent via mobile/cel-phones (mms) For items "lost in the mail" we will submit a claim to Royal Mail (if appropriate) or forward necessary documentation for buyer to make a claim with their own postal service if the transaction references an item sent outside the United Kingdom. Packages which are refused by the buyer or not picked up from the post office are treated as "abandoned". Should we incur any out of pocked expenses (eg courier fees) as a result of such actions these will be deducted from any refund due to the buyer.Layaway Policy
