Two handsome belt or sash buckles from the late 19th or early 20th century

CONDITION: good vintage condition with expected wear for age

APPROXIMATE DATE: 1890s – 1900s Germany

MATERIALS: metal

DESCRIPTION:

Here is a handsome pair of belt or sash buckles which date from around the turn of the 20th century. They are made in repoussé brass in the distinctive Austro-Hungarian version of the Art Nouveau style, one being a single frame and the other a two part buckle. They were manufactured in Germany.

Single buckle measures 3 x 3¼ ins (7.5 x 8 cm)

Two part buckle measures 2 x 3 ins (5 x 7.5 cm)

These lovely ornaments are part of a large private collection of belt or sash buckles currently in my shop. Other examples from the collection, attached to original shop display cards, can be found in the final photograph. These items all show classic Art Nouveau or early 20th century decorative motifs. They are of good quality and sturdy construction, not later copies.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

These pretty ornaments are in wearable condition and would suit collectors, re-enactors or anyone interested in recreating the look of the early 20th century.

Buckles can be worn as a clasp at the neckline of a plain jacket, dress or sweater to turn it into a dressier outfit. Single buckles also be mounted upon fabric and worn as a choker or sew on dress ornaments.

The first Art Nouveau ornaments were hand made. These were very expensive and beyond the means of working people. These were quickly followed by mass produced versions made in stamped out metal for the popular market. These cheaper versions reproduced the typical motifs of the genre, but were produced by machine. Typically they were made with a swirling asymmetric design suggestive of organic or animal forms and were embellished with rhinestones or glass jewels.
