An attractive late 19th or early 20th antiqued silvertone buckle or clasp in the Art Nouveau taste.

CONDITION: good condition with expected wear

APPROXIMATE DATE: 1890s – 1900s

SIZE: 3 x 2 ins (7.5 x 5 cm)

MATERIALS: antiqued gold tone metal

DESCRIPTION:

Here is a large and handsome two piece belt buckle made in the ornate Art Nouveau style. It is made from antiqued silver tone metal with a moulded symmetric design featuring scroll work.

This pretty ornament is in wearable condition and would suit collectors, re-enactors or anyone interested in recreating the look of the early 20th century.

Alternately it could also be mounted upon fabric and worn as a choker or dress ornament.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

The first Art Nouveau ornaments were hand made. These were very expensive and beyond the means of working people. These were quickly followed by mass produced versions made in celluloid and stamped out metal for the popular market. These cheaper versions reproduced the typical motifs of the genre, but were produced by machine. Typically they were made with a swirling asymmetric design suggestive of organic or animal forms.
