A collection of nine hatpins from the early to mid 20th century. They are decorated with fancy metal braid, fabric, sequins and rhinestones.
These hatpins would suit a re-enactor who desired to recreate an early 20th century look or would make a fine display framed or in a custom hatpin holder.
The collage picture shows the fashionable hats of the period which these accessories were designed to ornament.
Having originated in the 1850s to secure straw hats, hatpins became longer and more ornate over time. 1910 was the extreme of hatpin length, with the stems alone reaching 10 to 12 inches. Although hats became smaller and close fitting in the 1920s they continued in use as an ornamental hat accessory well into the 20th century. From the mid 20th century hats were often discarded by younger women and were worn only on formal occasions. For this reason hatpins fell out of use.
