Kanzashi is a kind of umbrella term which covers Japanese hair ornaments of many types. Hairpins such as these were usually stuck into the coiffure in such a way that the ornamental heading or top stood out proud from the hairdressing by several inches. Kanzashi hairpins can easily be worn with a modern hair style such as a high up do or French pleat. They look most effective when placed in the traditional way with the ornamental top standing out proud from the surface of the hair.
