Here is an unusual Japanese hair ornament which resembles a tiara. It was probably once part of a complete set of traditional wedding ornaments to be worn by a Japanese bride.
The piece is made in bright red celluloid with an upstanding tiara like element. Two tines project from the back at a 45 degree angle to hold it in position on top of the head. The front is decorated with an elaborate arrangement in bright gold tone metal. There are elements representing the flowers of the cherry blossom and a bird in flight.
This piece would have been worn with a traditional Japanese hair style and some examples of such coiffures are shown in the collage photograph.
