Here is an interesting hair accessory from the early to mid Victorian period. It comprises a dark comb base with a curved top to which has been affixed a gilt metal filigree panel. The design features scroll work and is set with cabochon turquoise stones with an interesting mix of roundels and ovals.
My feeling is that these two elements did not begin life together. The turquoise plaque is typical of early Victorian hair combs which the comb base is later. It is probable that the metal mounting lost its integral tines or was originally a brooch. However the restoration has been done to a reasonable standard and the resulting ornament is very attractive in wear.
Turquoise stones are typical of the early Victorian or romantic period The Romantic Period (1837-1860) reflected the love of a nation for its young queen and her love for her husband, Prince Albert. The jewellery of the period often reflected designs inspired by the renaissance and gothic eras.
Turquoise stones, cut into cabochon shape and mounted within a filigree or trellis like backdrop, are typical of hair accessories of this period. The turquoise stone symbolises healing and protection against injury or bad luck. The stone got its name of Turquoise stone from the fact that the caravan routes which brought it from the mines in central Asia passed through Turkey.
