This pretty little hair comb is typical of the restrained early Victorian design, after the extravagance of the Georgian period.
The ornament is made from polished brass in a classic leaf and foliage design. It is further embellished with faux pearls which represent fruits.
It would have been worn as illustrated in the final illustration which is taken from a selection of contemporary fashion plates. The typical early Victorian hair dressing has bunches of curls at the sides and a plaited or twisted chignon low on the back. Into this is placed a metal comb with repousee work or set with stones. Such combs are very similar in character to our example here.
