DESCRIPTION:

Here is a very pretty Spanish mantilla style comb which probably dates from the mid 20th century when the tourist trade in Spain began to flourish. It was undoubtedly made for the tourist market but that does not detract from the fact that it is a very fine hair accessory.

The ground material is celluloid faux tortoiseshell with a tall rectangular heading which is composed of an openwork panel. This is closely set with clear rhinestones having small dots of silver coloured metal set between to increase their sparkle. This decorative treatment became popular in the late 1950s and 1960s and is widely found on hair accessories of the period.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

This type of ornament is often known as Spanish or mantilla comb because it resembles a smaller version of the traditional large shell ornaments worn by Spanish ladies with their native dress. Any comb which has a high upstanding heading or top which stands proud of the top of the head is often called a mantilla comb. Such combs are worn placed high on the head in order to allow the beauty of their ornamental cresting to be admired.

Although the use of the high Spanish comb began to decline in the early 20th century the growth of the tourist trade in mid century revived interest in Spanish costume, music and dance. The large fiestas, such as the one in Seville, draw thousands of visitors who come to see the processions of women and men dressed in Spanish costume, and to enjoy the music and entertainment.

The final picture with the collage shows some illustrations of similar hair accessories taken from contemporary sources and the manner in which they were worn
