DESCRIPTION:

Here is a large and handsome Indonesian Java hair comb of the type which is traditionally used for weddings and special occasions.

The base material is gilded brass and the curved heading has seven flower shaped elements arising from it in the classic manner. Each of these is encrusted with clear and AB rhinestones and is placed upon a hinged mount. The comb has four metal tines to hold it in position in the hair.

In this configuration the comb can be worn in the back of the dressing. With care the metal tines can be bent backwards to allow the ornament to be worn tiara style, with the raised floral elements standing proud of the head like a coronet.

The collage picture shows similar headdresses in use and is taken from contemporary Indonesian sources of wedding sites.

Large and elaborate headdresses are still part of the traditional dress worn on festive and ceremonial occasions such as weddings in Borneo, Sarawak, Sumatra, Java and other western islands of Indonesia. Elaborate metal headings gilded, embossed and engraved are attached to combs and worn tiara like on the front or top of the head. These are frequently accompanied by many quivering metallic pins set with rhinestones and adding sparkle.

Such hair combs and headdresses are still part of the wedding regalia for bridal couples. In the past they were passed down through families as treasured heirlooms. However the ornaments are now usually rented from a specialist company who also does the bridal make up and hairdressing for the great day.
