Here is a handsome matched pair of very solidly made Victorian two pronged combs or hair pins in antiqued brass. Each has two tines and the ornamental heading comprises an openwork ball which is pierced into a fancy design.
The ornaments may once have been part of a set. Ball topped hair pins like this were scattered among the curls of the elaborate Victorian evening coiffure in the manner shown in the collage photograph. There are also matched sets comprising a ball topped hair comb and two matching hair pins of complementary design.
These balls combs and hairpins were produced in very large numbers, and are found with balls of pearl, shell, gilt ormolu, coral or even carved jet. Sometimes the balls themselves are elaborately decorated with engraved or inlaid patterns.
While large and elaborate back combs, known as "peigne Josephine", are quite common, single ball topped hair pins are less usual.
