Here are two Chinese nail protectors in silver tone metal repousee designs decorated with coloured enamel.
These nail protectors are related to the habit of noble Chinese and Manchu ladies of growing one of more finger nails very long to display the fact that they did no manual work. The long carefully trimmed nails were a sign of rank and status. In order to protect them thin metal covers studded with jewels or similarly protected were worn. These examples probably date from the early 20th century.
