Here is a wonderful example of Bengel style Machine Age modernist jewellery.
This handsome necklace incorporates squares of faux amber glass which are linked together by geometric elements in chromed metal. It has an unusual hand crafted loop fastening.
As an Art movement Modernism involved a rejection of ornamentation and sought inspiration from technology. Objects influenced by modernism are concerned primarily with essential qualities of colour and flatness, form and function, and exhibit a reduction of interest in surface decoration.
Modernist ornaments are simple and sculptural. Rather than being embellished with faceted stones they rely upon minimal surface decoration and upon the excitement of movement and drama for their impact. The salient points in this type of design are a concentration upon craftsmanship, integrity of materials and quality of finish.
