This is a wonderful piece of historic Machine Age jewelry
This necklace is a classic example of Modernist work. Objects influenced by modernism are concerned primarily with essential qualities of colour and flatness, form and function, and exhibit a reduction of interest in surface decoration.
A wonderful Jacob Bengel style modernist Machine Age Necklace with a delicate feel to it.
The necklace has green wood conical shaped beads with chrome caps of the same distinctive shape. Placed in between are globular chrome beads. In the centre front is a round green bead with saucer shaped chrome caps. All these elements are wired to a chrome chain with a ring clasp.
As an Art movement Modernism involved a rejection of ornamentation and sought inspiration from technology. Objects influenced by modernism are concerned primarily with essential qualities of colour and flatness, form and function, and exhibit a reduction of interest in surface decoration.
Modernist ornaments are simple and sculptural. Rather than being embellished with faceted stones they rely upon minimal surface decoration and upon the excitement of movement and drama for their impact. The salient points in this type of design are a concentration upon craftsmanship, integrity of materials and quality of finish.
The final illustration shows a plate from the standard work on Jakob Bengel (Art Deco Jewelry) by C Weber-Stober. 2002. Notice the similarity of the flower shaped bead caps to the Bengel example.
