This is a wonderful piece of historic Machine Age jewelry
This necklace is a classic example of Modernist work. Objects influenced by modernism are concerned primarily with essential qualities of colour and flatness, form and function, and exhibit a reduction of interest in surface decoration.
Here is an interesting Machine Age look choker necklace made in a three coloured combination of metal beads.
The brass, silver and black enamelled elements are formed into overlapping flower shapes with globular chrome beads placed between. The beads at the back which connect the central element to the screw clasp are also in alternating silver and brass effect.
The look is very much in the style of Jakob Bengel.
As an Art movement Modernism involved a rejection of ornamentation and sought inspiration from technology. Objects influenced by modernism are concerned primarily with essential qualities of colour and flatness, form and function, and exhibit a reduction of interest in surface decoration.
Modernist ornaments are simple and sculptural. Rather than being embellished with faceted stones they rely upon minimal surface decoration and upon the excitement of movement and drama for their impact. The salient points in this type of design are a concentration upon craftsmanship, integrity of materials and quality of finish.
