This is a stunning Art Deco machine age necklace in the modernist style of Jakob Bengel. It features blue glass beads on metal links combined with chrome spacers and globular beads.
The necklace is from the 1930's era and was probably made in Germany.
The central bead is approx 16mm in diameter with chrome bead caps, the chrome beads are 10mm in diameter and the oval of small blue glass beads measures approx 12mm x 10mm (excluding the loops).
As an Art movement Modernism involved a rejection of ornamentation and sought inspiration from technology. Objects influenced by modernism are concerned primarily with essential qualities of colour and flatness, form and function, and exhibit a reduction of interest in surface decoration.
Modernist ornaments are simple and sculptural. Rather than being embellished with faceted stones they rely upon minimal surface decoration and upon the excitement of movement and drama for their impact. The salient points in this type of design are a concentration upon craftsmanship, integrity of materials and quality of finish.
